Welcome to the Twitter Party

I received an email from someone I am mentoring in the world of blogging and Twittering and I thought this would be a good conversation to share. She had some really good questions.

She writes:
I've been following you on Twitter and I've tried out for a couple of your contests. Still figuring my way around Twitter. It's different on Twitter. some people talk about stuff but mostly it informs about blogs and contests right or do you think its for day to day socializing. Just curious about your thoughts. I try to get in on the conversations but never get any responses. Maybe because I'm new and my blog isn't up yet. Well, just wanted to keep you informed.
Twitter is a lot of things and is changing all of the time. Each person uses it slightly different. People who are really into blogging or have an online business and are trying to make money online with their blog, website, or sell a product are probably using it to promote their sites, themselves, and/or their business. I do that to an extent. But I also socialize with it and have made friends with people I didn't know existed and had no way of knowing other than Twitter. I'm even following Shaquille O'Neil and have Twittered him - you da bomb Shaq!

When I started I didn't know what to write. I couldn't see myself just putting random things on there like what TV show I might be watching that minute or what I was eating because why would random people even care. Heck, they don't even have a clue who I am. But eventually I started doing that because others were and I was joining in the conversation. I think that is what makes Twitter a community. It is like standing in a room of people at a party and you don't know most of them but eventually you mingle and talk about the weather, politics, your kids, your favorite restaurant, a bit of news, and maybe promote your business.

You might not get responses when you Twitter. I don't get all that many and at first that bothered me because it kind of seemed like everyone at "the Twitter party" was talking to each other and I was standing in the corner and no one even talked to me. But, I think that was probably my "I'm a 10 year old and want you to like me" side of my personality. I do have days like that and other days I just join in. And, just because I see all of the Twitters doesn't mean those people are getting responses either.

I would say the best thing to do is join in. That is also how you get more people following you. And, don't be afraid to just click on someone's user name and ask them a random question. Hey, the least that could happen is they stop following you - no worries - there are hundreds of thousands of more Twitterers to follow.

It's all a learning game.

First time to your blog. Saw your tweet. I love this post.

I have been on twitter for only a couple of months. I started using it as a way to gather with other women during organized twitter parties (#gno). First, it was just a few friends from the blogging world that also tweeted. Then, it started growing. Now, we are a community that has grown from simple socialization into a group that gives through fundraisers, does giveaways, and gets to know each other real time. It has been a terrific platform to connect with women.

Because #gno was my primary purpose for being on twitter, I was surprised when I started experiencing secondary benefits. One of the biggest to me is learning more about social media. I love clicking on the various URLs, leading to many smart, fresh ideas. I love the sharing, connecting, and mentoring that is commonly found here.

Finally... it is a great promotion and networking tool. Wanna quickly get the word out about an event or product? There's no place like Twitter!

So many things to love!
